Marimba Workshops
A marimba is wooden xylophone with piped, buzzing resonators under the keys or tone bars to create more volume. The benefits of marimba playing are known to be social, psychological, therapeutic and musical, with connection to other people in a group being intrinsic to the marimba experience. The workshops are fun, positive and socially creative experience for all ages.
ABOUT OUR WORKSHOPS - These workshops typically cater to primary school ages however they can also provide workshops within a high school setting and / or teach adult workshops. Their instruments are a combination of 2 and 3 octave marimbas allowing 2 or 3 participants on the one instrument at any given time. In a group session, they can provide enough marimbas for up to 20 participants at a time. The marimbas are diatonic and based on the Southern African style of marimba. The workshop instructor will also use either a 'doof' drum, a djembe or a shaker to help participants keep the beat.
The marimba is a delightful melodic percussive instrument with wooden bars tuned to produce a diatonic scale (all the white notes on a piano) and is played with small mallet or beater. The marimba is a very accessible instrument for people of all ages and regardless of any prior musical experience.
